Örnsköldsvik Municipality has 56,000 inhabitants. Around half of these live in the town of Örnsköldsvik, or in neighbouring areas. Bjästa, Husum, Bredbyn and Köpmanholmen are the largest communities outside of Örnsköldsvik.
In Örnsköldsvik, the countryside, communities, and town offer a variety of accommodation options. Detached houses are the most common type of accommodation. You can get to Örnsköldsvik by train, air plane, bus or car.
Buses to other towns and smaller communities within the municipality depart from the travel centre in Örnsköldsvik. City buses that travel around Örnsköldsvik depart from Örnparken, which is close to the market square.

The Botniabanan line makes travelling between Umeå and Sundsvall easy and convenient. Trains stop at the travel centre in central Örnsköldsvik. The regional train, Norrtåg, also stops close to Örnsköldsvik Hospital and in Husum.

Airline SAS operates the domestic route Örnsköldsvik–Arlanda from Örnsköldsvik airport.The airport is at Gideå, which is 25 kilometres from the centre of Örnsköldsvik.
